Home Altars - altar de ofrendas en el hogar

Your home is called the Domestic Church.  The family is the primary means for experiencing God and learning about our faith.  It is where we learn about love, forgiveness, compassion, sacrifice and more.  It is through the home that we learn about preparing for and attending Mass as well as celebrating the sacraments.  As you prepare your child to celebrate the sacraments, you will receive supplies to make an offering altar for your home to use for family prayer.  If you already have an offering table at home, you can add the items.  You will receive the following three items to decorate for your offering table: a prayer cloth, candle and blessing cup.

Prayer Cloth: use fabric or permanent markers to decorate your prayer cloth.  You can also use crayons.  Make sure you iron the crayon decorated cloths before washing it.  Prayer cloths should be hand washed as needed.  Use Church symbols to decorate your cloth such as a cross or crucifix.  Youth should bring the completed prayer cloths to class on February 2 to be blessed by Fr. EJ.

Candle: Decorate the votive candle with permanent markers and/or craft items you may have at home.  Keep decorations appropriate for a home alter by using a cross or crucifix, hearts, flowers and other images you might see in church.  Use candle with adult supervision only.

Blessing Cup: Decorate your blessing cup with a permanent makers.  Use the book sent home with your Blessing Cup for ideas for Family Prayer time.

When all three items are decorated and your offering table home alter is set up in your home, send a picture by email or text to Colleen Gerke.  the image of your offering table will be displayed on this page.
